Snoring - when and why?
Snoring is common and normal, caused by factors such as the anatomy of your mouth and sinus, as well as your weight. Nearly everyone snores at times, from babies to the elderly, with instances often worse due to allergies and colds or through the consumption of alcohol.
When we fall into deeper sleep, the soft palate, tongue and throat relax. These relaxed tissues are more prone to partially blocking your airway and vibrating leading to that well known and much hated noise - snoring!
As we age, snoring often worsens. The reasons for this include gaining a bit of weight, increasing alcohol consumption and a loss of muscle tone, sometimes due to lower oestrogen levels in post-menopausal women. Ironically, snoring can also be worsened by the use of medication to help us sleep.
