  • The importance of good light

When we are in our sixties we require 3 times more illumination than in our twenties, so investing in a good quality light is vital. Those with a visual impairment are often functioning at their visual threshold, so improving light quality can offer exceptional benefits.

A study by Cornelissen et al. (1995) found that, for tasks such recognising faces, those with reduced vision required over 1,000 lux of light whereas non-impaired individuals achieved similar results at just 1 lux. This becomes even more of an issue for close work as lux falls by 4 times as the distance from the light source doubles.

Other implications for those with a visual impairment include discomfort caused by glare and a longer light-dark adaptation period. It is, therefore, important to try and keep even light levels throughout the living space, particularly on stairs and landings, avoiding light sources and surfaces that result in harsh reflected light.

The right light for the job

The use of night lights are an excellent method of ensuring even light throughout the home. These lights can offer subtle, consistent light that does not produce glare and are easy to place anywhere thanks to their small size and battery power options.

When considering a suitable task light buyers should look for a source that offers targeted light that provides good coverage to maximise the useful lux. It is now recommended that task lights are positioned below eye level and in front of the user, rather than the traditionally 'over the shoulder' position. This positioning helps to reduce glare while maximising the available light.

A thought should also be given to some of the portable lights available, such as our Foldaway Portable Light. Carrying a good quality light source can help in situations where the ambient lighting is poor, such as reading a menu in a restaurant or checking the timetable at a bus stop.
