Traditionally affecting children, bruxism is increasingly common among adults and can also be associated with sleep problems such as snoring and sleep apnoea. The condition can be brought about by medication, including SSRI antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), as well as the use of alcohol and caffeine or smoking.

People can grind their teeth while awake or asleep, which can make it difficult to identify. Tell-tale symptoms of grinding include face, neck and shoulder pain, as well as headaches and earache. You may also suffer from disturbed sleep. Perhaps the most common diagnosis of bruxism can come from your dentist, who may discover worn-down or broken teeth, possibly leading to expensive dental work.

The risks or symptoms of bruxism can be reduced but finding ways to relax, such as meditation and regular exercise. It is helpful to try an maintain a steady bedtime routine to reduce the impacts of disturbed sleep.
