Eax Wax Build-up - Causes and Solutions
Ear wax is produced by the gland in the ear canal to help clean, lubricate and protect the ear. Wax often falls out on its own but can build up over time and start to block your ears.
Ear wax build up can lead to the following symptoms, often being triggered after a shower or by swimming.
- Hearing loss
- Earache or a feeling your ears are blocked
- Ringing or buzzing in your ears (Tinnitus)
- A loss of balance or feeling dizzy or sick (Vertigo)
When removing ear wax you should avoid placing items in the ear - this can push the wax further into the canal causing damage the canal or eardrum. It is recommended that you use 2 or 3 drops of olive oil in your ear and lying on your side for 5 to 10 minutes. Repeating this 4 times a day over a week should help to loosen ear wax and allow it to fall out.
Unfortunately, ear wax removal is rarely offered by medical practitioners, although it is available through some professionals at a cost. Professional methods of removal include micro-suction or irrigation. It is important that this process is completed carefully with water of the correct temperature to avoid dizziness associated with caloric or vertigo effects.
